Key learning points

  1. To say ‘his’, ‘her’ or ‘its’ before a singular or uncountable noun, both masculine and singular, we use ‘su’.
  2. ‘Su’ and ‘sus’ mean ‘their’, referring to something that belongs to more than one person.
  3. Spanish doesn’t have a word for ‘do’ or ‘did’ in questions (auxiliary). Only the main verb is used.

Keywords

  • Possessive adjective - an adjective referring to possession; in English this includes 'my' and 'your'

  • Preterite - a tense used for completed events in the past

  • Cognate - a word in more than one language that has the same meaning and linguistic origin

Common misconception

The final ‘-s’ in ‘sus’ refers to more than one person.

The final ‘s’ refers to a plural noun.

Emphasise the importance of context in understanding the meaning of 'su'. This will help students to understand whether it means 'his', 'her', 'its' or 'their'.
