Key learning points

  1. Masculine nouns ending in -or gain an -a when referring to a woman or girl.
  2. Some nouns relating to jobs have specific feminine forms e.g. el jefe > la jefa.
  3. Adjectives of nationality can be used as nouns to refer to people from a particular country.
  4. Cultural icons are people or artefacts identified by members of a culture as representative of that culture.
  5. Cultural stereotypes are oversimplified ideas, beliefs or images ascribed to all members of a particular culture.

Keywords

  • Noun - word for a person, place or thing

  • Adjective - word that gives information about a noun

  • Nominalisation - the process of making a noun from a verb or adjective

Common misconception

'inglés' can only be an adjective.

'inglés' can be an adjective, as in 'la comida inglesa' (English food), or a noun, as in 'el inglés' (the English person (m)). The process of making a noun in this way from an adjective or verb is called nominalisation.
