﻿Hello, my name is James, and I'm your teacher for today's lesson. Today's lesson is the first of four on number at the applying learning stage. Today, we're going to be counting individual objects and giving each object that we count a different number name. For this lesson, you will need items to count from your house, which can be absolutely anything. So today I'm going to be using cups and bowls and spoons and building bricks, a number line, just draw a straight line on a piece of paper. Write the numerals above it at equal intervals, and draw dots underneath to show how much they're worth. And sensory or messy play. So today I'm using shaving foam, but you can use sand, or rice, or crushed up cornflakes, or baked beans. Absolutely anything. Pause the video whilst you get your resources. Prepare the working area. Find a quiet space to work away from all distractions. Ensure that your learner is comfortable. And make sure that you've got all of your resources nearby. Press pause while you get things ready. Let's get ready. Look, listen, learn. Count with me. Let's get going. One, two, three, four, five, six Now what comes next? Yep, that's right, seven, eight, nine, fantastic counting. Well done, everybody. Hmm, how many dots can you see under this number? Excellent. Well done for saying six. Did you count each dot? Fantastic. Well done. Let's see how many dots we've got on this slide. Remember, every time we count, we're going to see a different number name, and we're going to take them away as well, so that we know that we've counted them. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. What do you think comes next? Fantastic. Nine. There were nine dots on the page. You've all been doing some amazing counting. I want to move on now, so that we're counting on a number line. Remember, we're going to work from left to right. Okay. Let's get going. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, and the last number again. Excellent. Well done, nine. Okay, this time we've got some counters and I want to put them on the number line. Remember, we're going to start from left to right and place a counter on each number. One, two, three, four, five. How many do you think there are? That's right. There were six. There were six counters, and we've moved them all on to our number line. Excellent counting everybody. Okay. Let's try and count some things from my house. One, two, three, four, five, six seven, eight, nine. How many cups did I have? Yes, that's right. Fantastic. I counted nine cups. Well done. This is a number grid. It's really simple. It's just boxes with the numbers in. And if you want to, you can put something to show how much they worth. You can make a really easy version of this out of an old egg box that's empty. Let's use it to see if we can count how many ducks we've got. One, two, three, are there any ducks left? Of course there's not. So how many ducks did we have? One, two, three. We put them all into their own box. Fantastic. Excellent counting everybody. Let's use a number grid to count how many bowls we've got, ready? One. Two. Three. Four. I've got no bowls left, but let's just count how many we had again. One, two, three, four. I had four bowls, and I used my number grid to help me count them. This time I want to take the forks away as we count them, so that I know that I've done them, and I don't count them a second time. Count with me. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. What was that last number again? Amazing. Nine. Wonderful counting, everybody. Well done. Oh, no. Look at all of these spoons that somebody's dropped on the floor. I wonder how many we've got. Let's move them out of their pile and into a straight line, so that we count them only one time. Ready? One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. How many spoons did I count? Let's go again. One, two, three, four, five. What was that one again? Six. Amazing. Well done for counting all of those spoons. Look, I've put some bricks into some shaving foam, and I thought that we could count them to see how many I've put in there. I'm going to take them out and wash them in the water. And then I put a towel down, so that I can put them there to dry. Can you help me find all of my bricks? Thanks very much. That's absolutely amazing. Are you ready? One. Two. Three. Oh, it's so sticky. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. I think I've got them all now. Let's just check. Okay, I can't find any more in the shaving foam. I've forgotten. How many do I have? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Can you remember how many do I have? Yes, that's right. I have eight building bricks. Thanks for all of your help. Thank you for all of your help finding all of my building bricks. I wonder whether you can have a go now. Why don't you put some items into sensory material with a grownup, and count how many are in there? Pause the video whilst you complete your task. So how many did you find? That's amazing. Well done. You did some fantastic counting. Well done for doing such excellent counting today. You've all learned to count individual objects one at a time, and give each one a different number. If you need to make this a little bit easier, work between some lower numbers, maybe work between numbers five to nine. Repeat and learn those number names and say them in the same order, lots and lots and lots of times. Maybe you need a grownup to help you to move the items as you're saying the number names. If you want to make this harder, try counting items with certain properties, like, can I count three wooden things? Or can I count four red things? Choose a number and count on from there. So instead of always starting at one, start at number three and see if you can count on from that. If you want more ideas and want to apply this to different life skills, can you set the table for everybody in your house? Can you count out how much cutlery, how many plates and how many drinks people need? Can you make your family members a drink? Can you count out the cups?
