﻿Hi, I'm really looking forward to our lesson today. I hope you are, too. Before we get started, this is just a little reminder. We're here to support any approaches you might already be using, and any work you might have already been set. We know that this lesson is going to be going out to so many different children and families. So if you're not sure about anything or have any questions, then please do contact your usual therapy team. Hi. When you look at this picture of me, can you try and figure out how you're looking at it? Are you starting from the top and working your way down and going, there's a picture behind her, there's a hairband on her hair, then she's got a fringe, then it's her nose. Or, are you just looking randomly? If you were looking for something, are you going to start on the left of the picture and go, oh yeah, there's something brown, and then there's a picture, and then there's nothing. Okay, so this is how we read and how we look for items in a book or in a bag. We scan. And that's what today's lesson is going to be about. What is scanning? Well, it's our ability to control the muscles around our eyes to look in a specific direction, such as left, right, up, or down, okay? And this is really important when we're reading, because generally, we read from the left to the right on one line, and then we drop down and we do it again over and over. We need good scanning so that we can search a room for obstacles so that we don't trip over them. And if we don't have good scanning, we might sometimes misread certain words or not see that there is something on the floor, for example, when you're walking. So pause the video now 'cause what we're going to need are some beads of different colours on a string and some large letters or numbers. Restart once you're done. Okay, so ask an adult to put different coloured beads on a string in any order, and you then have to call out the order of the colours of the beads in order. If you're right, then they can change the order and you can try again. If you make a mistake, just go back. Have another go. You could also try calling out the colours in reverse. Or for a bigger challenge, you could use more beads or try with smaller ones. You can also try this with something like fruit loops on a straw, okay? So. And you can hold the string like that so then you have to say the colours from top to bottom, or you could hold it like that, and then you can go left to right. So look at these pictures and let's see what we think of these. So, when we're starting over here, it's easier because they're all the same colour and you can go square, circle, triangle, triangle. For the next one, we have more shapes and we have different colours. So triangle, circle, circle, square, triangle. Or, red triangle, orange circle, orange circle, blue square, red triangle. And you can make this harder and harder. Like, at the very end we've got green square, yellow circle, orange circle, green square, red triangle, purple circle, and orange square. Pause the video now to try beads on a string. For your next activity, it's all about matching numbers and letters. And if you want, you can even just use shapes, okay? You don't have to use letters or numbers. You could just use pictures of different toys. So, ask an adult to write down all the letters of the alphabet or the numbers from 1 to 10 on a piece of paper. Using large letters, such as magnetic ones, randomly take one, look at it, find the matching one, and put it on top, okay? You can make this really tough by having all the numbers and the letters at the same time. And you could also jumble them up to make it more of a challenge for you. So there you can see some numbers and you can see some letters. So, if I found the letter L, I could scan and look, and that's where I would put it. Okay? And you are then going to scan from left to right and match. Now you pause the video to try the letter and number matching. Our next activity, you need your Connect 4 game. If you don't have Connect 4, then we can simply just do some grid scanning. So you're going to ask an adult to fill it with all of the red and yellow tokens. You're then going to look at them and call out the colour order. So remember, it's really important we're going to work from left to right. And at the end of that row, we're going to drop down and start again, okay? You could also try scanning from top to bottom, so doing each column at a time. If you really wanted another challenge, you could ask an adult to write letters or stick stickers on them and you could call those out instead. So, here is a grid that I've made. Let's have a look. If we were going to read from left to right, so the direction of the purple arrow, we were going to say the colours, we would go, orange, blue, red, white, yellow, red, then drop down and start again. Yellow, white, orange, blue, blue, white. You could also make this more fun by saying every second one, you're going to whisper. So you could go, white, red, yellow, orange, white, red. Okay? You could also go in the direction of the green arrow and start at the top and work your way down. So, you would go orange, yellow, white, yellow, blue, yellow. And again, you could try practising with different tones of voice. So you could say, you could use a squeaky voice and a deep voice. So you could go, blue, white, red, orange, yellow, white, okay? So just have fun. Pause the video now to try Connect 4 or grid scanning. So, if you want to make things easier, you can use fewer beads and you can also use the same colour. Remember how I had just the orange ones? You could also use larger beads, or, if you want to make it trickier, use smaller beads, okay? And there are loads of other grids that you can work on and you could simply just even draw one the way I did and just make one up for yourself. Remember, do the best you can for you.
