﻿In today's lesson, we're going to look at food. We're going to think about all those foods that may be really tricky. And when our parents tell us that "You're just fussy." Well, we're going to look at our eyes and how we can help our eyes, because they can sometimes trick us into thinking that foods that are unfamiliar, that we don't know very well can not be safe. But let's see if we can change that in today's lesson. We, as therapists have tried to think of the best way to continue to support children, young people and their families. We will be exploring topic areas that we regularly provide advice and support on across all ages and abilities. Each lesson will have ideas and activities that can be carried out at home or in school. This information is to be used alongside any specific strategies or resources which have been given by your child's school or therapist. As I've just mentioned in today's lesson, we will be thinking about why we may be fussy about different foods. So for today, I would like you to get a snack that you really enjoy to have while we look at this lesson. We're also going to need some pens, pencils and paper, and you will get a little chance to get them all ready in a second. So first, what we're going to do is we're going to draw our favourite meal today. So pause the video to complete your task and get your pens, pencils and paper ready. And then I want you to draw your favourite meal. You may, if you have, use a paper plate to do the drawing, but otherwise just draw a big circle on a normal piece of paper and draw your favourite meal. The thing that you really, really enjoy to eat, so have a chat with your parents and carer about this. And once you're finished with your task, press play again and then we will carry on with the lesson. Great. Our eyes help us to feel safe. And we've just drawn a picture of our favourite meals. So a meal that is safe and that we really enjoy doing, but in some countries, the picture behind me would be a real food treat. But not for me. I don't know, what about you? Tell me what are the things that you don't enjoy eating. Maybe have a chat with your parents and carer about this as well. Our eyes will sometimes trick us. Sometimes we will look at something that just look very familiar and our eyes will say, "This is unsafe." But sometimes our eyes are just tricking us and we need to help them to understand that even when food doesn't look very familiar, it is still safe and we can trust our parent and carer in this to help us. So I know it takes a lot of courage to eat new foods. So one of the things that we can do is to ask your parent or carer to always have a plate in the middle of the table, so not touching your plate and not right in front of you with two or three things that you wouldn't normally eat. Just have it in the middle of the table for your eyes to look at. And remember, no one would expect you to eat it, but it's just there for your eyes to see. because what's really interesting is when your eyes start to see something for about seven times, it will start to believe that things are safe to eat, but hang on, remind your parent or carer that even if you've seen a food seven times, you may still be a little bit hesitant to eat it. However, you may think it's safe to start touching it and to start to feel what it feels like.
