Hi, everybody, Miss Hill here.

Today, we are going to be rounding three digit numbers to the nearest multiple of 100.

So, before we begin, put on your hats, cho, tighten your ties, c-c-cho, and tell the computer, now I'm a mathematician.

Perfect, before we get started, make sure you're somewhere nice and quiet because today's going to be a fun lesson.

So, here is today's lesson agenda.

First off, we're going to start with our star words, we're then going to do some rounding to the nearest 100, we're going to do some exploring using our dice, and we're going to do some more exploring, and then your independent task.

So, before we begin our lesson, please make sure that you have the following resources, a pencil, a piece of paper, a ruler, a dice or access to an online dice.

Great, let's get started.

Here, we have our star words.

Round, nearest multiple of 100, so we need to make sure we're using those today, so if you see that I'm not using them, please make sure you do the actions to me on the screen, so if I say rounds and I'm not doing it, I expect you to be doing this at me.

Great, let's get started.

So, here we have the number 525.

What's the number? Super, and we want to round it to the nearest 100.

So, when we round 525 to the nearest 100, we need to think, what are the nearest 100's? It could be 500 or it could be 600, absolutely.

So, if we have our number line here, we're going to put 550 'cause that's right in the middle of 500 and 600.

Now, is 525 greater than 550 or less than, is it going to sit closer to 600 or closer to 500? Well, it's going to sit closer to 500, so 525 rounded to the nearest multiple of 100, so rounded to the nearest 100, is going to be 500 and we also know our rhyme.

One to four, we hit the floor.

Five to nine, we reach up high.

However, when we use that with 100s, we need to make sure that we're looking at our tens diene and as the tens dienes here is two, we're going to round that.

Here is another number, 968.

Now, I wonder, if you're able to round this mentally? Hmm, if not, that's okay, 'cause we're still going to draw our number lines.

Now, our nearest 100s to 968 are going to be 900 and 1,000.

Now, we need to make sure we put 950 on, which goes into the middle of 900 and 1,000.

Now, is 968 less than 950, so closer to 900 or is it more than 950, so closer to the 1,000? But we know it's more than 950, so 968 rounded to the nearest 100 is going to be 1000.

So, we're going to play some dice games now.

So, we're going to roll our dice three times to get a three digit number, you're going to represent this number on a number line and round it the nearest 100.

So, I will show you.

So, I am going to roll, a five, so I'm going to put that into my 100s.

The next number I roll is a two, let's pop that into my tens.

And the next number I'm going to roll is a one.

So, my number is 521, so my next step is to draw my number line and I know my nearest 100s to 521 are 500 and 600.

Here we go.

500 and 600.

So, my next step is to write in 550, now, is 550 greater, excuse me, is 521 greater than 550 or less than? It's actually less than, so I know 521 is going to be closer to 500 on my number line, therefore, 521 rounded to the nearest 100 is going to be 500.

Great job, everyone, that was really fun, wasn't it? Now, let's move on with our lesson.

So, here we have the number 157, is it closer to 100 or 200? Well, we know 150's going in the middle and 157's actually very close to 150 but 157's still greater than 150, therefore, 157, round it to the nearest 100, is going to be 200.

250, this is a tricky one, hmm, 250, pop it into your head, first I need to draw my number line with my nearest 100s, so 200 and 300 and I'm going to pop 250 in the middle.

Ooh, do you round up? Do you round down? Now, I know there's a song.

One to four, we hit the floor.

Five to nine, we reach up high.

But there's a zero, oh, we need to look at our tens column, and in our tens column is a five and we know with our five, we need to round up.

So, 250, rounded to the nearest 100's going to be? Well done, it's going to be 300.

So, you're task today is to round these five different numbers.

So, you need to draw your number line, just like we did for your fun dice game, and then you need to do some rounding.

Number one's 437 rounded to the nearest 100.

Number two is 154.

Number three is 542.

Number four is 771.

And number five is 931.

So, remember to draw your number line, using your ruler, and round each number to the nearest 100.

So, 437 rounded to the nearest 100 is 400 because we round down.

154 rounded to the nearest 100 is 200 'cause we round up.

542 rounded to the nearest 100 is 500 because of that four 10, we're going to be rounding down.

771 rounded to the nearest 100 is, well, it's going to be 800 because we're going to be rounding up.

And 931 rounded to the nearest 100 is? It's going to be 900 because of that three tens, we're going to be rounding down.
