Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. The pronunciation of a word helps to identify if it is spelt with -sure or -ture.
  2. The -ture ending to a word can be confused with a root word ending in '(t)ch+er', such as 'teacher' or 'richer'.
  3. 'Colour blocking' is a useful practice strategy.
  4. How to spell the curriculum word: grammar.

Keywords

  • Suffix - a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning

  • Noun - a naming word for a person, place or thing

  • Pronunciation - the way in which a word is spoken

Common misconception

All words with a suffix will have a recognisable root word.

Show that not all words with suffixes or common word endings will necessarily have a root word that we can recognise.

Practise saying the focus words in sentences to ensure children understand their meaning and can use them correctly, before spelling.
