London parks and green spaces

I can explain why it is important for cities like London to have parks and green spaces.

Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Green spaces and trees help soak up noise and pollution from traffic and provide peaceful spots.
  2. Nearly one fifth of London is covered by around 3000 parks and green spaces.
  3. London was declared the world’s first National Park City in 2019.

Common misconception

Pupils may think that all parks have playgrounds and play equipment like swings and climbing frames.

Some parks do have places to play, but not all of them. Parks are natural open spaces often with grass or woodlands that we can enjoy.

Keywords

  • Green spaces - Green spaces are areas of land with plants, grass or trees that people can visit, such as parks, woods and wetland areas.

  • Parks - Parks are outdoor public spaces where people can go to relax or play.

  • Peaceful - When something is peaceful it is quiet, calm and not disturbed.

  • Recreation - Recreation is an activity done for pleasure.

  • National Park City - A National Park City is a city where everyone is encouraged to work together to make life better for people, places and nature.

Talk about parks in your local area with pupils. Where are your local parks? What are they used for? Have pupils visited them? Do the parks have ponds or water features? Do pupils think that having parks and green spaces is important where they live?
