Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: when opponents are trying to gain possession we must move into space quickly ready to receive the ball.
  2. Move: to outwit opponents we dodge to move them one way before quickly changing direction to maintain possession.
  3. Think: carefully choosing where to pass will increase the team's chance of keeping possession of the ball.
  4. Feel: setting high standards and working hard on our passing and moving skills demonstrates that we have integrity.
  5. Connect: playing by the rules in a game situation demonstrates that we have respect for our teammates and opponents.

Keywords

  • Pass - transferring the ball from one player to another

  • Possession - the team in control of the ball

  • Opponent - a person who is on an opposing side in a game

Common misconception

Pupils might believe that by dodging they will always create space and outwit the defender. Pupils dodge to find a space then stand still waiting for a pass.

Pupils need to remember that the defenders role is to respond to the dodge, therefore they may need to dodge again and look for new space. Persevering with this technique will help pupils successfully outwit their opponent.

In game situations, pupils tend to gravitate towards the ball and the concept of finding space is lost. Ensure playing areas are a good size so there is ample space for pupils to use. Defenders cannot pressure the passer which should ensure time to pass the ball accurately.
