Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: passing requires being side on to the target, pushing the ball with the stick's flat side and following through.
  2. Move: receiving requires us to track the ball, adjusting the position of our feet and using a relaxed grip for control.
  3. Think: good decision making helps us select when and where to use a long or short pass in order to keep possession.
  4. Feel: encouraging our teammates when mistakes are made demonstrates excellent integrity and empathy.
  5. Connect: to ensure our teammates are ready to receive the ball, we need to communicate effectively with them.

Keywords

  • Passing - transferring the ball from one player to another

  • Receiving - when we gain possession of the ball from our teammate

  • Accurate - consistently hitting our target

Common misconception

Pupils hit the ball with both the flat side and the curved side of their stick.

Remind pupils that they can only use the flat side of the stick and they lose possession if they break this rule.

If possible, using an area with a wall/ fence surounding it can be useful for acting as a backboard for pupils who miss the ball when receiving it. This can stop time being wasted with pupils chasing after hockey balls.
