Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Strength includes maximal, static, dynamic and explosive strength.
  2. Dynamic strength is similar to muscular endurance.
  3. Explosive strength is power.
  4. The one rep max test measures maximal strength.
  5. The hand grip dynamometer measures strength.

Keywords

  • Strength - the ability to overcome a resistance

  • Dynamic strength - the ability of a muscle, or muscle group, to undergo repeated contractions, avoiding fatigue (muscular endurance)

  • Static strength - to hold a body part (limb) in a static position and muscle length stays the same

  • Explosive strength - product of strength and speed (anaerobic power)

  • Maximal strength - the largest force a muscle, or group of muscles, can exert in a single contraction

Common misconception

There is only one type of strength which we usually associate with lifting heavy weights.

There are four types of strength: maximal, dynamic, static and explosive.

Teaching the fitness tests practically enables students to grasp the understanding of the protocols and why they are done.
