  3. Social media sites monitor what we view, what we like, who we are friends with and which websites we visit.
  4. Our data is worth a lot of money because it can be used to target adverts at us.
  5. We can control how much data is collected about us.

Keywords

  • Data - detailed information stored online

  • Monitor - collect information about someone

  • Internet Protocol (IP) address - a unique set of characters that identifies each computer that communicates over a network

  • App - abbreviated form of ‘application’, a software program designed to perform a specific function, normally downloaded on to a digital device

Common misconception

All websites keep our data safe.

Some websites are more secure than others, but all data is at risk, up-to-date settings and passwords will help to protect this.

Encouraging students to look at the settings for their school email account is a useful, real life way to model account settings.
