Key learning points

  1. The sound-symbol correspondences [a], [o] and [u] can be practised with many place names in Spanish-speaking countries.
  2. Masculine adjectives that end in ‘o’ change to an ‘a’ when the person or animal being described is female.
  3. Adjectives ending in –e or -z can describe a female and male person or animal; they do not change.

Keywords

  • Está - part of the verb estar, to be, being meaning she, he, it is

  • Adjective - a word that gives information about a noun

  • [a] - pronounced as in 'casa'

  • [o] - pronounced as in 'dos'

  • [u] - pronounced as in 'universo'

Common misconception

Adjectives ending in -e and -z change to -a when the person or animal described is female.

When an adjective ends in –e or -z , it can describe a female and male person or animal. It does not change.

During register routines, or during the day, use ¿cómo está hoy? regularly so pupils can revise adjectival agreement and vocabulary by saying how someone else is in the class. You could also ask ¿Está + adjective ? to revise use of si/no.
