Key learning points

  1. The sound-symbol correspondence [i] sounds like the ‘i’ in the Spanish word ‘idea’.
  2. When the person or animal being described is male, adjectives end in -o.
  3. When the person or animal being described is female, adjectives end in -a.
  4. 'Está' means 'she, he, it is' or just 'is' when talking about mood and temporary states.

Keywords

  • [i] - pronounced [i] as in idea

  • Está - part of the verb estar - to be, being, meaning she, he it is

  • Adjective - word that gives information about a noun

Common misconception

English and Spanish sound-spelling links are the same.

Sound-symbol correspondence [i] is different in Spanish and English and reading aloud Spanish words with [i] leads to more secure knowledge.

Next lesson, after taking the register in Spanish: 'Estoy presente', 'Está ausente', pupils can describe themselves using a single sentence: 'Estoy curioso/a hoy' with adjectival agreement for male/female.
