Key learning points

  1. The sound-symbol correspondences [a] and [o] can be practised with the source words 'alto' and 'dos'.
  2. The irregular verb 'estar' means to be, being when referring to location.
  3. 'Estoy' means 'I am' and 'está' means she, he, it is.
  4. Spanish pronouns are often not used; the verb ending indicates the person who is doing the action of the verb.

Keywords

  • [a] - pronounced [a] as in casa

  • [o] - pronounced [o as in dos

  • Estoy - I am

  • Está - she, he, it is

  • Pronoun - a word that takes the place of a noun, like 'it', 'you', 'she'

Common misconception

Spanish verbs always need pronouns, like in English, to convey the person doing the action.

Spanish verbs don't always need pronouns. The verb endings indicates the person doing the action.

Two slides with different levels of challenge are provided for Task C4 for adaptive teaching purposes. Pupils can practise with Spanish words for support, or without, for additional practice, as required.
