Key learning points

  1. Sound-symbol correspondence [ci] is pronounced differently in Spanish and English and benefits from frequent practice.
  2. 'tiene' is part of the verb 'tener' and means 'she, he, or it has' or just 'has'. E.g., Sofía tiene una bici.
  3. Cognates are words that are exactly or nearly the same in two or more languages.

Keywords

  • [ci] - sound spelling correspondence

  • Cognate - a word that is exactly or nearly the same in two or more languages

Common misconception

Cognates are always exactly the same in both languages.

Cognates might be written and/or pronounced differently. It is usually easier to recognise a cognate in the written form.

Giving a notional time for short speaking tasks is a useful way to encourage pupils to speed up mental processing and increase spoken fluency. Teachers may want to repeat short speaking or writing activities, shortening the time with each repetition, according to the needs of their own classes.
