Key learning points
- The SSC [qui] sounds as in 'equipo'.
- ‘Hay’ means ‘there is' and 'there are’, and like ‘tiene’ can be used to describe places.
- Sentences with ‘hay’ often start with ‘en’.
Keywords
[qui] - pronounced as in ‘equipo’
Hay - means ‘there is' and 'there are'
Common misconception
'Hay' is pronounced as the English 'hi' and means there is. There is another word for 'there are'.
The 'h' is not pronounced in 'hay' and it means both 'there is' and 'there are'.
There are many English words with 'qui' (equipped, acquintance, quiet, etc.), so it could be a good idea to emphasise that in Spanish 'qui' is never pronounced 'cui', as this sound requires a 'c', as in 'cuidado'.
