Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Kebabs originate from the Middle East, with vegetables and/or meat in a marinade (which helps soften/flavour the food).
  2. A recipe is a set of instructions for preparing and cooking a dish (name, ingredients, equipment and method).
  3. When preparing and cooking food we need to work safely and hygienically.
  4. The food skills used to make veggie kebabs are cutting, threading, making a marinade (shaking/whisking) and brushing.

Keywords

  • Kebab - vegetables, fish or meat cooked on a skewer

  • Threading - to push food onto a skewer

  • Marinade - adds flavour to food

  • Recipe - a set of instructions for making a dish

Common misconception

When cooking it is fine not to weigh and measure accurately, approximate measurements are fine.

It is important to weigh and measure ingredients accuarely, so that the recipe works well.

If pupils find cutting tricky, or you feel that they are not confident, use the ‘fork secure’ technique or pre-cut the vegetables. To thread, instruct pupils to press the skewer into the food, with the food sitting on the chopping board (so it is stable).
