Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Glamorgan sausages originate from Wales and can be dated back centuries. They are made using leeks and local cheese.
  2. Leeks are part of the onion family, grown in the UK. Cheese is made from cows' milk, with many varieties being made.
  3. Vegetables and fruit should be washed before use to remove any dirt and bacteria.
  4. The food skills used to make Glamorgan sausages are measuring, slicing, grating, dividing, coating and using the oven.
  5. Traditionally, Glamorgan sausages are fried. However, they can be oven baked to be healthier (as no oil is added).

Keywords

  • Glamorgan - a county in Wales

  • Coating - to cover the surface of a food

  • Oven baked - food baked in the oven

Common misconception

Sasusages contain meat, usually pork.

Many sausages contain meat, but there are many recipes that are vegetarian or vegan. Glamorgan sausages are vegetarian (as they contain cheese and egg).

Sometimes it is more practical to have some ingredients pre-prepared, so that pupils can focus on their food skills and making. For example, a food processor could be used to slice and chop the leeks, and/or make breadcrumbs. The use of the food processor could be safely demonstrated.
