Key learning points

  1. Flapjacks are a traditional UK baked bar, with its roots going back to the 16th Century.
  2. Oats and apples are grown and harvested from around the UK.
  3. The food skills used to make flapjacks are measuring, grating, mixing, dividing and using the oven.
  4. If we have sweet foods, we should have them occasionally and in small amounts.

Keywords

  • Flapjack - a traditional baked recipe made with oats

  • Harvest - the time or process of gathering crops

  • Oats - the grains from a plant used in cooking

Common misconception

The flapjack recipe contains apple and sultanas, so must be part of our 5 A DAY.

No, the flapjack does not count towards our 5 A DAY. There is not enough fruit, and they are high in sugars and fat (from butter). If we eat these types of foods, we should have them occasionally and in small amounts.

Pupils can be creative and use different fresh and dried fruits, as well as juice, in their flapjack bites. Provide a small selction from them to choose from. If baking trays are limited, get pupils to use a small foil tray and press the mixture inside - they can then take this home.
